How to Maintain Bonsai, Maintenance Repotting Bonsai Plants

Bonsai World

The Art of Bonsai

To be able to develop good bonsai one requires knowledge and ability in two distinctly different areas. They must be able to successfully combine both art and horticulture. The Art of Bonsai

The art is in the shaping and developing of the tree. It is following a vision of an imagined future beautiful old tree. Bonsai is the illusion of age. The horticulture is knowing the plants growth patterns and needs in order to keep it alive.

It is of little use if a person is great at shaping and developing a bonsai but has little to no knowledge of how to keep them, not just alive but robust and healthy.

It is equally useless if a person is great at horticultural techniques (that is, keeping the plant alive) but doesn't have the ability to shape the tree, or even worse, can create an initial shape but can't maintain the graceful lines of the tree as it ages.
